Culling

The word culliing seems to be a trigger word. A catch all word that people perceive to be bad. The online dictionary defines it as selecting to remove. For example, you cull weeds from your garden. The weeds die of course and are typically composted to be used in the future.

I can cull thoughts from my head by selecting ones that do not move in a direction i want to go. Sometimes we have to cull hard to kinda push a reset button. Spring is a great time to clean and be ready for a new year! Cull out what didn’t work last year and try again.

In the world of poultry, we cull out weak birds that do not serve the flock health. They still serve a purpose tho! Everything has a purpose. I can use them to feed reptiles, dogs, cats, birds of prey. Larger birds that are strong but do not serve a purpose in the flock, such as extra males, are culled to serve other purposes. Currently I have a dozen or so eating bugs on the property. They are living their best lives eating bugs and running free! Eventually they will be harvested to feed my family. The bones will be made to make rich broth, the meat made into dinners, organs for dogfood, the rest can be buried to make my garden grow.

Recently I had a facebook post gain alot of exposure, it was about my no waste method of ustilizing quail. At first, the comments were great and supportive, then as the post was shared, the comments became darker and condescending. Wasting quail on dogs, wasting my time, one person even said they were useless animals, not sure if she meant the dogs, quail or both. I do not have the thickest skin and I have to say some of the comments have shocked me. Then this morning, I realized these are people who do not regularly follow me and do not know who I am. They didn’t take the time to absorb who was speaking and doing the work. These quail were my extra roosters! So I have culled their comments from my brain, but left them on the post because its a reminder to me to scroll on by if I do not like something, can’t use the information or cannot take the time to read a bit further into the why and who made the post.

Culling is an important word, super important in every aspect of life. A uselful tool to implement in daily activities.
