How to Ship Hatching Eggs Successfully
In 2025, I shipped approximately 82,000 hatching eggs.
That number did not happen because I found one packing idea online and decided it looked good. I have shipped eggs in bubble wrap, foam noodles and more improvised combinations than I can remember. Every shipment taught me something about wasted space, crushed boxes, cracked shells and the invisible damage that can reduce hatchability even when an egg arrives looking intact.
The biggest lesson was simple: getting an egg to the customer unbroken is not enough.
A hatching egg is a biological system. The shell, membranes, albumen, yolk and air cell all have jobs to do. A package must protect that system from shock, vibration, movement and crushing while still being practical for a breeder to pack repeatedly.
Foam egg shippers consistently gave me the combination I needed, but the products available at the time did not fit my operation well enough. Because I shipped so many eggs, I began developing my own.
I started with commonly used shipping-box dimensions, tested foam density, adjusted the hole sizes to accommodate the eggs breeders actually ship, and boxed and unboxed more prototypes than I care to count.

Successful hatching-egg shipping requires more than preventing visible cracks. Why Shipping Hatching Eggs Is Difficult
The outside of an egg is hard, but that does not make the contents motionless.
Inside the shell are membranes, albumen, a yolk, a developing blastoderm and an air cell. During transportation, the package may experience:
Drops
Repeated vibration
Sudden stops
Conveyor transfers
Compression from heavier boxes
Temperature changes
Multiple loading and unloading events
Some damage is obvious. A shell arrives cracked, crushed or leaking.
Other damage is harder to see. The membranes supporting the air cell may be disturbed. Internal structures can experience mechanical stress. An egg may arrive with a perfect-looking shell and still hatch differently from an egg collected and incubated on the same farm.
That is why shipped eggs should never be promised the same hatch rate as eggs that never entered a carrier system.
What Research Says About Mechanical Damage
Farkas et al. (2024) studied the effects of mechanical shock and vibration on broiler breeder hatching eggs. Their work showed that rough handling can reduce hatchability even when the damage is not limited to visibly broken shells.
The researchers also discussed earlier experimental work in which eggs exposed to stronger and longer vibration had poorer hatchability and higher embryonic mortality than control eggs.
In plain English, a hatching egg does not have to crack for transportation to affect it.
A large field study by Yassin et al. examined more than 724 million broiler hatching eggs. Hatchability was associated with breeder flock, egg-storage length, strain, season and hatchery conditions.
That is important because packaging is only one part of the result. The seller controls egg selection, storage and packaging. The carrier controls much of the transportation. The buyer controls what happens after delivery and during incubation.
No shipping material can correct poor breeder nutrition, old eggs, weak fertility or incorrect incubation.
Here’s what I do on my farm: I control the parts I can control. I select appropriate eggs, store them carefully, pack them so they cannot move freely and use a consistent shipping system.

What USPS Requires
USPS allows eggs in domestic mail when:
Each egg is individually cushioned.
The package is designed to withstand shocks encountered during normal Postal Service handling.
Anticipated temperature changes are not likely to damage the eggs.
Those are minimum mailability requirements, not a promise of hatchability.
The words “Fragile” or “Hatching Eggs” do not replace proper packaging. A label cannot hold an egg still, prevent a box from being compressed or absorb an impact.
Package eggs as though the box will experience normal automated handling—because it will.
Carrier requirements can change, so always check the current rules before shipping.
Why I Prefer Foam Egg Shippers
The purpose of an egg shipper is to control movement and distribute pressure.
Loose wrapping can leave one egg supported differently from another. If the outer box is packed inconsistently, empty spaces may allow the contents to shift. A tightly wrapped egg may still transmit impact directly through the wrapping.
Foam provides a repeatable structure.
Each egg has a defined position. The surrounding material cushions the shell while separating it from neighboring eggs. Top and bottom pads help support the complete group.
This does not make foam magical or indestructible. The correct foam density, hole size, box fit and final packing all matter.
A foam shipper can still fail if:
The wrong hole size is used
Eggs are forced into openings
The top and bottom are not supported
Empty box space is left unfilled
The shipper is loose inside the box
The outer carton is too weak
The package is poorly sealed
Eggs inappropriate for shipping are included
The complete package has to work as a system.
How I Pack Hatching Eggs
The exact materials depend on the species, egg size and order quantity, but my basic process is consistent.
1. Select the Right Eggs
Do not ship every egg simply because it is fertile.
I avoid eggs that are:
Cracked
Thin-shelled
Heavily soiled
Extremely porous
Misshapen
Unusually large or small for the breeding group
Too old for the shipping schedule
From questionable breeder health or nutrition
Packaging protects an egg during transit. It cannot turn a poor hatching egg into a good one.

2. Match the Egg to the Foam
Choose a hole size appropriate for the species and normal egg dimensions.
The egg should be supported without being forced. An opening that is too large may allow unnecessary movement. An opening that is too tight can add pressure or make packing and unpacking difficult.

3. Load the Eggs Consistently
Place each egg into its position carefully. Confirm that every egg is seated properly and does not contact another egg.
Do not rush this step simply because foam makes packing faster.
4. Add the Top and Bottom Protection
The center egg-holding layer is only part of the system. Use the appropriate pads above and below it.
The package should protect the eggs from every direction, not just from side-to-side contact.
5. Eliminate Empty Space
This is one of the most common packing mistakes.
After the foam shipper is placed in the box, fill or stabilize the remaining space so the shipper cannot slide, bounce or rotate inside the carton.
Shake the closed inner box gently. You should not feel the contents moving freely.
6. Decide Whether to Double-Box
I double-box approximately 80% of my hatching-egg shipments.
Double-boxing adds another carton and a cushioning zone around the inner package. If the outer box is compressed or struck, it can absorb part of the force before that force reaches the egg shipper.
I consider:
Egg value
Order size
Shipping distance
Box dimensions
Weather
Expected handling
Whether the single-box configuration already has sufficient structure
I do not claim that every possible shipment must be double-boxed. I use it frequently because one extra layer of protection is often worth the additional packing time and cost.
7. Seal and Label the Package
Use strong packing tape and seal all necessary seams.
Apply the complete return and delivery addresses clearly. Mark the package appropriately, but never rely on markings as its primary protection.
Why Double-Boxing Helps
Think of the outer box as a sacrificial layer.
If another package is placed on top, the outer carton receives the first compression. If a corner is struck, there is more material and distance between the impact and the eggs.
The inner box should not rattle inside the outer one. Cushion the space between them so the inner package remains stable.
Double-boxing does add weight and size. That may increase shipping costs, so the complete package needs to be designed efficiently.
The goal is not the biggest box possible. The goal is controlled protection without wasted space.
Mistakes I See Breeders Make
Wrapping Eggs Without Stabilizing the Box
Individually wrapped eggs can still move as a group. If the entire bundle shifts inside the carton, the eggs experience repeated acceleration and impact.
Leaving Space Around the Foam
Foam only works as intended when the complete shipper is supported. Empty space lets the shipper become the object bouncing inside the box.
Packing Eggs That Should Never Ship
A cracked, dirty, weak-shelled or badly misshapen egg is not improved by expensive packaging.
Assuming Faster Shipping Solves Poor Packaging
Time matters, but speed does not cancel mechanical damage. A poorly packed egg can be damaged during a short trip.
Promising a Hatch Rate
A seller cannot control every step after the package leaves the farm. Carrier handling, temperature, buyer storage and incubation all influence the final result.
Promise careful selection and responsible packaging—not a guaranteed hatch.
Ignoring Breeder Nutrition
The shell and internal egg quality begin with the breeder flock.
Packaging cannot replace proper calcium balance, vitamins, trace minerals, protein, breeder health or appropriate selection.
Should Shipped Eggs Rest Before Incubation?
Many keepers allow shipped eggs to settle before incubation, particularly when air cells appear disturbed.
The best approach depends on:
Species
Egg age
Storage conditions
Transit time
Air-cell condition
Incubator type
There is not one universal resting period proven best for every shipped egg.
Inspect the eggs when they arrive. Allow cold eggs to warm gradually before incubation so condensation does not form on the shell. Candle carefully if you need to evaluate air-cell condition, and avoid excessive handling.
The goal is to balance recovery from transport with the loss in hatchability that can occur as eggs continue to age.
