How These Estimates Are Calculated
This calculator uses the following planning assumptions for Coturnix quail:
Egg production: 5 eggs per laying hen per week.
Hatch rate: 70% of the hatching eggs set.
Sex ratio: Approximately 50% hens and 50% roosters.
Starter Box: 36 hatching eggs. Additional eggs are calculated when your estimated requirement exceeds 36.
Initial freezer birds: Estimated male chicks, assuming they are raised for processing rather than retained for breeding.
Freezer value: An illustrative value of $1.50 per bird—not a guaranteed selling price, profit, or net savings.
Monthly grow-out estimate: Setting 25% of your flock’s weekly egg production, applying a 70% hatch rate, and using a four-week month. This assumes all resulting chicks are raised for processing.
Your weekly egg goal represents total eggs produced, before setting any aside for hatching. Using 25% for hatching leaves approximately 75% for eating or other uses.
Bird and egg estimates are rounded upward. The calculator does not account for mortality, seasonal laying changes, time to laying or processing age, or breeding males retained. Future hatches require fertile eggs and suitable breeding arrangements.
Dollar estimates exclude housing, equipment, electricity, labor, and processing costs. Monthly freezer value represents potential production after grow-out—not meat available immediately.

Rather than collecting from a single breeding cage, your order is gathered from multiple breeder groups whenever possible. This helps maintain greater genetic diversity while preserving the traits our flock has been selected for over many years.
Easy Feather Sexing
One of the biggest advantages of Pharaoh Coturnix is that males and females can usually be identified by feather color beginning around 17–18 days of age.
Females develop a speckled breast.
Males develop a rust-colored breast with a white chin strap.
No vent sexing required.
Fast Growing and Productive
Under proper nutrition and management, Jumbo Pharaoh Coturnix typically:
Mature quickly
Begin laying around 6–8 weeks of age
Produce large, speckled eggs
Reach full body condition by approximately 8–10 weeks
Although hens often begin laying around 7 weeks, we recommend keeping young birds on a quality starter or grower feed until approximately 10 weeks of age before transitioning to a layer ration. Supporting skeletal growth before heavy egg production helps maximize long-term health and productivity.
