Jumbo birds. Jumbo attitude. The Fabulous Fee
The Genetics Behind Falb Fee
If you're fascinated by Coturnix color genetics, Falb Fee is one of the most interesting varieties to work with.
The Fee gene is an incomplete dominant dilution gene. Rather than changing the feather pattern, it changes the color of the pigments within that pattern. Warm reds, browns, and gold tones are diluted away, leaving behind striking shades of black, white, and gray. Because the underlying pattern remains unchanged, Falb Fee still carries the classic Pharaoh pattern—it simply appears in grayscale instead of brown.
Birds carrying one copy of the Fee gene show the dilution, while birds with two copies generally display an even cleaner, more dramatic black, white, and gray appearance. Our line is homozygous for several generations.
Our Falb Fee line isn't selected for color alone. At Bryant's Roost, we've worked to combine this beautiful mutation with our jumbo Coturnix bloodlines. Mature hens commonly reach 15 ounces under proper management, giving you the eye-catching appearance of Falb Fee without sacrificing the size and productivity expected from a quality jumbo line.
Maximize Your Hatch Rate
Shipping hatching eggs is only half the equation. Proper incubation has an even greater impact on your hatch rate.
As a Bryant's Roost customer, you'll receive an exclusive discount on our Incubating Masterclass, where we cover everything from setting shipped eggs and calibrating your incubator to troubleshooting common hatch problems. The course combines poultry science, current research, and years of hands-on experience to help you hatch healthier, stronger chicks.
Whether you're incubating your first dozen eggs or your hundredth, our goal is the same: to help you achieve the best hatch possible from every shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. While there is no official breed standard for "Jumbo" Coturnix, the term is commonly used for bloodlines that consistently produce birds weighing over 10 ounces by approximately 10 weeks of age. Our Falb Fee line exceeds that benchmark, with mature hens commonly reaching around 15 ounces under proper nutrition and management.
-
Falb Fee birds carry the Fee dilution gene on a Pharaoh (wild-type) base. The gene lightens the warm brown pigments while leaving the feather pattern intact, resulting in the beautiful black, white, and gray appearance that makes this variety so distinctive.
-
Yes, they will be cream colored with black racing stripes. Very distinctive.
-
Like other Jumbo Coturnix, Falb Fee hens are productive layers and typically begin laying around 6 to 8 weeks of agewhen provided proper nutrition and lighting.
-
Hatchability depends on many factors, including shipping conditions, incubator accuracy, humidity, temperature, egg handling, and incubation experience. We cannot guarantee hatch rates, but we carefully select, store, and package every shipment to give your eggs the best possible start.
-
We recommend allowing shipped eggs to rest large end up before incubation in cool weather. Set immediately in hot weather.. Once rested, place them directly into a properly preheated incubator. Avoid unnecessary temperature fluctuations, as consistent incubation conditions help maximize hatchability.
-
Absolutely. Falb Fee are standard Coturnix quail with a unique color mutation. Their care, feeding, housing, and incubation requirements are the same as other Coturnix varieties, making them an excellent choice for both first-time quail keepers and experienced breeders.
