Feed Trials

What in the world are feed trials? I have to say I would never thought I would have asked that question let alone run 4! When I first started what became known as “Then Feed Experiment” , I was just checking feed for myself and another breeder. I have the space and numbers to be fair and we put it together and off I went! It basically comes downs to a bunch of measuring and weighing and observation. I also had to be fair to get the answers I needed.

The original feed trial was Kalmbach vs Purina vs Tucker Milling. Kalmbach was the winner in all categories. Purina was the worst and most expensive in all categories.

The 2025 Feed trial was to track Show Pro Farm Supply Quail Starter. I maintained objectivity and while it isn’t the cheapest, the fertility and hatch rate is considerably higher than the rates I got in 2022. I firmly believe that this translates to better hatch rates for my customers and I have continued to use it. I also believe in cleaner feeds, which it is, and I like supporting small business.
